The Consumer Product Safety Commission and DuPage County Health Department offer tips to help consumers make safe toy purchases this holiday season.
Remember the days of breaking out the Sears or JCPenney catalog to peruse all the toys while making that list for Santa? Needless to say, safety was rarely a concern when dreaming of what would arrive under the tree. Irwin Mainway’s Bag O’ Glass might have even looked attractive to some kids. The U.S. Postal Service anticipates this will be its busiest holiday shipping season. Find out when items should be mailed by and where you can mail items on select Sundays in December.
The holiday rush is about to set in. Along with waiting in line to buy gifts at stores, the lines can be even longer at the post office as gift givers mail cards and packages to friends and family across the county and around the world. In St. Charles, residents have an extra day to mail packages from the Post Office. The U.S. Post Office, 2600 Oak St., will be open from noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays, Dec. 2, 9 and 16, according to the St. Charles Post Office. The U.S. Postal Service, on its website, reports that it is anticipating this will be its biggest holiday season in its 237-year history. Downtown St. Charles Partnership celebrates Holiday Homecoming success, says parade turnout is largest in recent history.
They were two nights to remember, officially kicking off the holiday season in St. Charles and culminating with the annual Electric Christmas Parade along Main Street. There was no question that crowds turned out for both events — especially the parade, which had more than 50 entries this year. Now, it’s official: The St. Charles Police Department estimates that more than 13,000 people turned out for Saturday’s parade, its best turnout in recent years and perhaps the best in its 20-year history. Downtown St. Charles Partnership trumpeted the number in a release issued Thursday. As part of the always popular Christmas Walk and House Tour weekend in Geneva, the Steeple Walk returns from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9. Now in its fourth year sponsored by the Geneva Cultural Arts Commission, it features a variety of seasonal music concerts at four Geneva churches, all within easy walking distance. Every year, millions of children sit down to make a wish list for Santa, hoping he will make all of their Christmas dreams come true. But what if Santa actually wrote back? The U.S. Postal Service is accepting "Letters From Santa," a program that allows parents and caregivers to play Santa by sending a letter signed by St. Nick to a child. According to a postal service news release, “The ‘Letters From Santa’ program helps parents fulfill the dreams of their own children.” Instructions to send a letter from Santa: Write a letter to your child from Santa Claus and sign it "From Santa." The Kane County Cougars will host a Christmas Meet and Greet event, featuring Santa Claus and Ozzie T. Cougar, from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 15, inside the upper deck level at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Children can meet Santa and Ozzie, pose for photos, as well as take part in numerous holiday activities inside the upper deck level. Those activities include a coloring station, ornament decorating station and a cookie decorating station. The event is free, although there is a nominal cost for participating in the ornament and cookie decorating activities.
