Tri-Cities residents, Patch wants to hear from you on the issues that affect you and your neighbors.

Welcome to Tri-Cities Talk—a regular feature in which we ask our Facebook fans to share their views on current issues facing Geneva, Batavia and St. Charles. Retiring at 50: Could You Follow This Woman's Extreme Savings Plan?

Here's the story of Patch reader Marlene Konkoly, who found creative ways to spend less and save more so she can retire at 50. This story is the first in our series about Extreme Savers.

Americans may be living longer, but our retirement plans aren’t keeping up. Which means people are living longer with smaller bank accounts. But Marlene Konkoly will retire at age 50. How did she do it? She contributes a whopping 45 percent of the gross annual income she earns as a procurement officer for an automotive finance company to her retirement—all while owning a home and remaining debt-free. Konkoly is actually well ahead of the retirement savings curve compared to many of her fellow Americans. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, fewer than half of Americans even know how much money they would need to retire. And nearly a third of employees who had access to a defined contribution plan such as a 401(k) did not participate …

I would like more details on traveling Eastern Europe for 10 days at only $1,400. We are planning a trip this summer and obviously know it's more in the summer, but each of our plane tickets are more than that. Luckily someone else is paying for the air travel, but still would love to see her budget/actual spending on that trip.   more ›

Tri-Cities Police Join in Salute to Peace Officers

The Kane County Chiefs of Police Association hosts its annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Ceremony at Mooseheart in Batavia.

To serve and protect. It’s a motto that many of us take for granted, but it is one that peace officers live by, and sometimes the stakes are high. Since records started being kept in 1791, 20,000 peace officers have made the ultimate sacrifice, putting their lives on the line for the residents of the communities they serve. Nationally, 16 officers have died in the line of duty this year, including Illinois State Trooper James Sauter. 28, who died in a fiery crash on March 28, 2013. Sauter, who according to Officer Down Memorial Page had been a trooper for nearly five years, was parked on the side of Interstate 294 late at night when his vehicle was rear-ended by a semitrailer. He is survived by his wife and family. Sauter’s family members …
