Changes Coming in St. Charles Wards 1, 2

Unofficial tallies show two former aldermen defeating 1st and 2nd Ward Aldermen Jon Monken and Clifford Carrignan.

St. Charles’ aldermanic races came in with largely tight tallies, according to Tuesday night’s unofficial tallies that indicated voters had unseated incumbents in the city’s 1st and 2nd wards, while holding onto three incumbents in the rest. Unofficial tallies showed 3rd Ward Alderman William Turned, 4th Ward Alderwoman Jo Krieger, who was unopposed, and 5th Ward Alderwoman Maureen Lewis retaining their seats, while two former aldermen unseated the incumbents in the 1st and 2nd Wards. In the 1st Ward, Ron Silkaitis, who has represented that ward before, appeared to be the winner. Silkaitis garnered with 266 votes, while incumbent Alderman Jon E. Monken secured 231 votes. First-time candidate Justin Osbourne trailed with 193 votes. “I give …

I cannot wait until these results are finalized and we get two thoughtful and independent Aldermen to replace Monken and Carrignan. The Council will be better off without those two.   more ›

Rogina Wins St. Charles Mayoral Race

Third Ward alderman has clear 2-to-1 lead over nearest contender in St. Charles mayoral race, according to unofficial tallies.

Third Ward Alderman Raymond Rogina handily won St. Charles’ mayoral election Tuesday night by a convincing lead over the nearest of his three competitors in a vote that saw fewer voters turn out to the polls than the mayoral contest four years ago. With unofficial results showing him with 2,031 votes — more than a 2-to-1 margin over his nearest challenger, Rogina accepted the win with eagerness about the future and a measure of graciousness. “I was a\surprised at the margin,” Rogina said late Tuesday. “These were three great guys running against me. I’m elated with the margin of victory, but I’m humbled by it at the same time.” Rogina said throughout the campaign, he listened to and learned from his opponents — Jake Wyatt, John Rabchuk and…

I would like to thank Alderman Lewis for being the only incumbent Alderman running with enough courage to come before the citizens and answer questions. The other three incumbents--Monken, Carrignan, and Turner--showed, to my way of thinking, their complete lack of respect for the voting public; I hope the voters remember that on April 9th. Two of the Mayoral candidates--Stein and Wyatt--took the…   more ›

Where many are thinking to singular, the point of allowing a doctor's office, or even bank, is to draw a consumer to that location and then entice them to stay for coffee, or lunch, or shop at a retailer. This is the exact reason most of us prefer doing business in Geneva, Oak Brook, even Chicago. These cities allow us to do multiple things in one stop. We absolutely need to focus on "…   more ›

Four Vie to Become St. Charles Mayor

A guide to the April 2013 mayoral race pitting a political freshman and three newcomers.

This race started early, as far as St. Charles’ municipal elections go, when Mayor Donald DeWitte announced in late August 2012 that he would not seek a third term as mayor. The announcement marked the beginning of a campaign that has become centered largely on whether the mayor and council are responsive to residents. Much of that contention was brought on by two key council votes related to the controversial Lexington Club development. A City Council committee voted to reject a tax-increment financing plan for the project in December, but then in early January, approved not only a revised TIF agreement, but the entire project on a tie 5-5 vote broken by DeWitte, a longtime supporter of the plan. If the Lexington project had been …

Patrick, Leadership is a team effort requiring discernment and experience. Ideas are a part, not the whole. Jake Wyatt has more experience than the other candidates, and it comes from a deep understanding of what is possible, what is not. Idle promises without the mechanics are not leadership. 10 Aim for Five Aldermanic Seats on St. Charles City Council

A guide to the April 2013 aldermanic races in St. Charles.

There are 10 candidates queued up for St. Charles’ five aldermanic races, although one of those is not a race — 4th Ward Alderwoman Jo Krieger is unopposed in her re-election bid. But there are contests for the other four seats, and the issues that have been shaping up in the race are diverse. Several are spinoffs from the City Council’s narrow 6-5 vote in January to approve the controversial Lexington Club, as well as anger related to efforts to push through the addition of apartments at the Corporate Reserve, a business park, and simmering tension over over the city’s use of tax-increment financing districts for the First Street Development and other projects, like Lexington. The bitterness over the Lexington decision has been well-…
