Newtown Celebrates Acts of Kindness on Charlotte Bacon's Birthday [VIDEOS]

At Newtown Kindness's Charlotte Bacon Awards, parents Joel and JoAnn Bacon and grandparents Dan and Lindie Bacon, formerly of Batavia and St. Mark's Church in Geneva, remember her personality and thank organizers for their work.

Dan and Lindie Bacon are former missionaries of St. Mark's Church in Geneva and former residents of Batavia. They moved to Newtown, CT, last year to help raise their grandchildren, including 6-year-old Charlotte Bacon, who died in the shooting at Sandy Hill Elementary School in Newtown. Charlotte would have turned 7 on Feb. 22. About 100 people flocked to Newtown Healing Center this past weekend to celebrate Charlotte's birthday by recognizing random acts of kindness. Awards are given to kids who did special things to help others, from reading to senior citizens to simply opening the door. Newtown Violence Inspires Kindness in St. Charles

Resident finds gift card on vehicle with a note instructing him t o ‘pay it forward’ in memory of the Sandy Hook School victims.

The reverberations from the violence at Sandy Hook School were felt far beyond Newtown, Conn., inspiring great sympathy but also fear among parents and educators in other communities across the nation. St. Charles was no different. Perhaps that is why, even as a nation reaches out in big and small ways to help a grieving Connecticut community, some have been inspired to do the same in their own communities. One might dismiss what a St. Charles man found on his vehicle last week as the result of Christmas spirit. Those who celebrate the season do, after all, take delight in secret gift-giving and spreading seasonal cheer. Except the note that accompanied the $10 gift card to Panera Bread made it clear this gift was not a typical season’s …

Grieving Has Just Begun in Newtown

St. Charles Patch editor shares his own perspective on a deadly shooting 20 years ago and how its aftermath relates to what is unfolding at Sandy Hook School.

A part of me died, I think, amid all the blood that spilled on a sunny Sunday morning 20 years ago when the devil came calling on a church in Colorado. John Miller was not truly the devil, of course, but what he did on Aug. 23, 1992, was clearly evil. He opened his visit to the First Free Methodist Church of Fort Collins’ second morning service in an argument with Valerie, whose divorce from him recently had been finalized. Asked to step outside the church, they headed toward the parking lot, an off-duty cop who attended the church trailing. As always, the handgun at Mike Swihart’s side created a visible bulge beneath his sport coat. I was in the church kitchen when the gunfire began. I heard about a dozen reports, then a pause. I ran …

District 303 Tightens Up Security

Some principals reassure parents by email that their concerns are being taken seriously after Newtown tragedy.

School principals in St. Charles Community Unit School District 303 reached out by email to reassure parents steps are being taken to ensure their children are safe, as well as to address the questions or even counseling needs children may have in reaction to Friday’s deadly massacre in Newtown, Conn. A gunman on Friday forced his way into Sandy Hook School, where he murdered 20 children and six adults before taking his own life. Before that violence began, he shot his mother to death in her home. Some principals, as Superindendent Dr. Donald Schlomann did, began emailing parents on Sunday to reassure them that student safety is a priority. Schlomann noted in his email that mental health and emotional struggles were becoming apparent as …

District 303 Plans Changes After Newtown Tragedy

St. Charles school officials to evaluate security measures, consider mental health concerns after a gunman killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.

Friday’s shooting deaths of 20 children and six adults at a schoolhouse in Newton, Conn., stunned the nation. Each detail that emerged about the violence at the hands of a deranged gunman struck a nerve for many parents, who wondered, “Are my children safe in their schools?” Late Sunday afternoon, while some St. Charles parents expressed their fears and concerns when St. Charles Patch hosted a Facebook discussion of the issue, St. Charles Community Unit School District 303 announced initiatives educators hope not only will keep children safe, but also will head off potential violence before it erupts. Superintendent Dr. Donald Schlomann sent the email about 4:30 p.m., about 50 minutes after the Facebook discussion began. Schlomann wrote …

All schools are trained for a "lock down." However, if a person shoots their way into a building through locked doors, we do not have a defense system in place. There are security companies that have engineered doors and windows to keep people out. We need better security, such as secure doors and windows. This would at least by time to take better measures. Our federal money is more secure than …   more ›

After Newtown: District 303 Parents Worry About School Safety

Late Sunday afternoon, some St. Charles parents expressed their fears and concerns about school violence when St. Charles Patch hosted a Facebook discussion of the issue.

Dr. Schlomann's Email to District 303 Parents

St. Charles Community Unit School District 303 Superintendent Dr. Donald Schlomann emailed this message to parents of District 303 students at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16.

The tragic events which occurred last Friday in Connecticut have resulted in a lot of discussion nationwide about a range of related topics.  My observation is that those discussions have centered on taking reactive actions in an attempt to provide certainty that the events at Sandy Hook School will never happen again. As the passage of time has revealed more of the facts about Friday’s events in Connecticut, much of the focus has turned to mental health and identifying individuals who may be struggling emotionally.  I would like to share with you some initiatives we are going to take in St. Charles District 303. As you might expect, our staff will review all our security measures just as many other school districts are doing.  More …
