Kane County Will Allow Cameras in Courtrooms

Chief Judge Robert Spence says Kane will join Illinois Supreme Court's pilot program.

Chief Judge Robert B. Spence announced Thursday that the 16th Judicial Circuit will apply to join the Illinois Supreme Court’s pilot program to allow cameras in the courtroom. The decision is based on the recommendation of the 16th Judicial Circuit Courtroom Media Committee.  “I appreciate the Media Committee’s work on this, and based on its recommendation, the 16th Circuit will apply to join the pilot program,” Spence said. “The committee will continue in its work on this, as we will need some rather detailed rules concerning the plan’s logistics. We want to be thoughtful about it and try to anticipate issues that might arise. The application will be submitted after the local rules are written.” The move was applauded by Judge Timothy …

DUI Roundup: Men From St. Charles, Bartlett Face Charges for Early AM Arrests

Two DUI arrests were collected from Geneva police reports last week. Both involved traffic stops in the early-morning hours. DUI Alcohol—Geneva police arrested Janet Gaytan, 51, of St. Charles on charges of DUI alcohol, driving with a suspended or revoked license and driving without lights when required after a traffic stop at around 1:38 a.m. April 15 at the intersection of 14th Street and Route 38, St. Charles, reports said. DUI Alcohol—Geneva police arrested Eric Shoffe, 34, of Bartlett on charges of DUI Alcohol, DUI with a blood-alcohol content of .08 or more, speeding and improper lane use after a traffic stop around 12:59 a.m. April 7 in the 600 block of North Bennett Street, reports said.    Patch reports on law enforcement activity…

18-Year-Old Driver Charged With Leaving Scene of Accident at Kirk and Fabyan

A Sugar Grove 18-year-old faces charges of leaving the scene of an April 12 accident at South Kirk Road and East Fabyan Parkway in Geneva. The rear of a Ford Ranger driven by Olivia Fleury, 18, of Sugar Grove collided with the front of a Jeep Liberty driven by Nicolle Razimoff, 18, of St. Charles around 4:45 p.m. April 12 at the intersection of South Kirk Road and East Fabyan Parkway, Geneva police reports said. Fleury was cited for failure to yield turning left and leaving the scene of a property damage accident, reports said. She has a court date of May 1. According to reports, no one was injured in the accident, but a tow was required. Razimoff’s Jeep was southbound on South Kirk, and Fleury’s Ford was stopped at the intersection of …

St. Charles 18-Year-Old Fined $250 for Underage Drinking

An 18-year-old is cited for underage drinking at 1:17 a.m. in downtown Geneva.

Geneva police cited Elizabeth Vanzuidam, 18, of St. Charles for consumption of alcohol by a minor around 1:17 a.m. April 14 in the 0-99 block of North First Street, Geneva police reports said. The citation carries a fine of $250 if paid before the notice date of Apri 24. Geneva raised its fine for a first offense for underage drinking from $100 to $250 on Jan. 17, after a series of discussions on the topic.

UPDATE: DuPage State's Attorney Won't Pursue Charges in Police Shooting at Fermilab

An internal investigation will still be conducted by West Chicago PD in the Feb. 18 incident. Here is a full account of what led to the shooting.

The DuPage County State's Attorney will not pursue criminal charges against a police officer involved in a Feb. 18 off-duty shooting on the Fermilab campus, officials announced Friday afternoon. "Based on the results of an incredibly thorough investigation, it is my conclusion that the People would not be able to meet their burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt that the officer involved in this incident committed a crime," said Robert Berlin, DuPage State's Attorney, in a release. "As a result, my office will not be taking any action against the officer." UPDATE: Sugar Grove Man Dies After Suicide Attempt Just Outside Mill Creek Market

Sheriff's Department: A 32-year-old man shoots himself in the head Tuesday while sheriff's officers attempt to talk him into giving himself up.

A 32-year-old man shot himself in the head Tuesday morning while in the driver's side of his car, parked just outside Mill Creek Market, 39W250 Herrington Boulevard. Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez said Wednesday that five officers responded to a message from the Sugar Grove Police Department, which had received a call from the man's girlfriend saying he was suicidal and armed with a handgun. The Sheriff's Department declined to release the name of the man in deference to family members, but said was taken to Delnor Hospital. A report in the Kane County Chronicle said the man died Tuesday night. Sheriff's reports said the man had a Yorkville driver's license but was living in Sugar Grove with his girlfriend. Kane Is Under 'Red Flag' Warning for Fire Danger Monday and a Freeze Warning Tuesday

Winds and other weather conditions make for increased fire danger. Meanwhile, we're in for another freeze.

The National Weather Service Chicago has issued warnings of "fire and ice." There are twin warnings for fire danger Monday and for below-freezing temperatures early Tuesday morning. The NWS has issued a Red Flag Warning for Kane County and other areas of Northern Illinois. According to the NWS, a Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low humidity and warm temperatures "will create explosive fire growth potential," the NWS Chicago says. The warning was issued at around 11 a.m. and is in effect until around 7 p.m. Winds are from the northwest at about 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, the NWS says. Relative humidity is as low as 15 percent. …

2 More Charged for Possession of Synthetic Marijuana at North Avenue Gas Station in West Chicago

Two additional arrest warrants were obtained Friday in relation to the alleged sale of synthetic marijuana at the Shell gas station at 184 W. North Ave., according to a press release from the city of West Chicago. The arrests follow a search warrant conducted March 22 at the gas station, the culmination of several weeks of undercover purchases of synthetic cannabis. The Shell gas station was found to be in possession of synthetic drugs commonly sold under name brands such as K2, Spice, Wild Greens, Pink Panther, Hindu Magic and Kush. Subsequent investigation led to two additional individuals being charged: Gopesh R. Patel, 53, of the 300 block of Tuttle Dr., Bloomingdale, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance with …

4 Youths Cited for Underage Drinking

Geneva police cited four youths with illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor around 2:01 a.m. March 18 in the 100 block of South Street, Geneva police reports said. Cited were Shauna Gargano, 18, of Bartlett, Carly Sanos, 18, of West Chicago, Jose Mondragon, 19, of St. Charles and Dylan Tucker, 18, of St. Charles. Mondragon also was cited for disobeying a traffic control device and has a court date of April 3 at the Kane County Branch Court, 530 S.
