St. Charles City Council reaffirms reinstatement of board that has led riverfest for past three years.
Pride of the Fox LLC and Executive Director Julie Farris received final affirmation Monday night from the St. Charles City Council to continue preparations for the annual riverfest that has become a city fixture for three decades. The unanimous council vote came without discussion — it was one of 34 items included in the council’s omnibus vote, items that earlier had received unanimous recommendations from a City Council committee. Omnibus items are lumped together and approved all at once, with one council motion and vote, instead of facing separate votes. The St. Charles City Council is expected tonight to consider finalizing the support it gave a week ago to Pride of the Fox LLC.
The Pride of the Fox Riverfest board and its crew of 150 volunteers face a daunting task indeed. Pride of the Fox LLC has averaged 10 months of planning and preparation each year to put on each annual three-day festival. This year, it has only about four months to do so. That assumes the St. Charles City Council follows through tonight on its action as a committee two weeks ago in returning the festival to the group. The follow-through action is expected — aldermen voted unanimously to recommend direction of the festival be returned to Pride of the Fox LLC. St. Charles aldermen recommend give tentative approval to committee that disbanded in the fall to return to work.
There’s a winner and a loser, but there’s something good afloat, and it involves the dragon boat. It looks like Pride of the Fox Riverfest will return for show No. 31 in June, even though the show appeared to be in dry dock after some apparent misunderstandings led to September’s decision by Pride of the Fox LLC to dissolve itself and the sudden resignation of its executive director. That crisis prompted an effort by Mayor Donald DeWitte and resident Tom Anderson to reorganize the St. Charles Festival Committee, the longtime organizer of the summer riverfront events, according to City Administrator Brian Townsend.
