Postal workers pulled the package when they thought they heard a ticking sound, officials said.
The "suspicious package" found at the Batavia Post Office Thursday morning turned out to be lifting weights, officials said. The package of weights was dropped off sometime Wednesday evening in the Automated Postal Center kiosk in the post office's lobby, the Daily Herald reports. The lobby area of the post office is open 24/7. Postal workers said they heard a "ticking sound" coming from the package, Beverly Howard, Postal Service customer relations coordinator, told the Kane County Chronicle. The Postal Inspection Service was called to the scene, followed by Batavia police and the Kane County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad at 5:19 a.m. Thursday. Police Thursday afternoon identified the Batavia woman who died at the scene of a head-on collision on Randall Road. The woman is 43-year-old Amy P. Holtorf, according to Batavia police. Holtorf was traveling northbound on Randall Road just south of Mill Creek when her 2005 Honda Odyssey minivan crossed the center lane and struck a 2012 Nissan Rogue traveling southbound, a police statement said. The crash occurred at 11:52 p.m. Wednesday. An occupant of the Nissan crossover SUV was flown by helicopter to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove in serious to critical condition. Update: Police Thursday afternoon identified the Batavia woman who died at the scene of the crash. A Batavia woman died in a two-car crash on Randall Road Wednesday night, according to police. An Aurora couple was also injured in the crash, which occurred at 11:52 p.m. Wednesday. The husband driver was airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove in critical condition, said Gary Schira, Batavia police chief. The wife was treated, released and was believed to be at her husband's side Thursday morning, Schira said. He did not have a current condition report for the man. Open house offers a chance for St. Charles residents to share their reactions to the work so far on the comprehensive master plan for downtown and the Western Gateway/Randall Road area.
Looking over the three options proposed as guidelines for the future development of St. Charles' West Gateway, Bill and Jane Ryan expressed a degree of satisfaction. The Ryans were standing in the St. Charles City Council Chambers on Tuesday, looking over the latest evolution of a proposed comprehensive development plan for the city's future. They said they have been attending meetings and been staying involved in the process as the city maps outs a plan to guide it over the next 20 years. One issue they said was of great concern to themselves and other West Side residents was housing – some of the ideas presented early on had too much proposed for the Western Gateway area.
