Bicyclists, joggers and pedestrians take to the new crossing beneath the Red Gate Bridge on St. Charles’ north end.
There was no formal ribbon-cutting Friday, no coffee or pastries, no string of public officials, each taking a turn to sing the praises of this latest monument to mankind’s ingenuity. Instead, beneath the canopy of a bright blue sky on a pleasant, sunny day, birds greeted the periodic walker, the occasional jogger and a trickle of cyclists making their ways for the first time over the pedestrian/bicycle crossing of the Red Gate Bridge. “A nice job they did on this, huh?” a cyclist asked as he pedaled past a guy shooting video of the bridge. It was similar to the remarks of joggers, cyclists and walkers early Friday afternoon, the first day the pedestrian/cycling crossing had been open for use. Red Gate Bridge, the city’s largest public …

School board members critical of proposed agreement to have District 303 spend up to $250,000 of the costs of installing traffic lights, other measures at Red Gate Road and River Ridge Drive.
Representatives of the city and St. Charles Community Unit School District 303 expect to meet this week to revisit the details of a proposed agreement to split the $500,000 cost of installing traffic lights and other improvements to the Red Gate Road entrance to St. Charles North High School. Early this month, the St. Charles City Council approved the intergovernmental service agreement to install traffic lights and turn lanes at the entrance to St. Charles North High School along Red Gate Road. But members of the District 303 Board of Education Business Services Committee red-flagged the agreement last Tuesday, instructing the administration to sit down with the city to continue discussions of the agreement. The agreement approved by the …

Local, county, and state officials gather for festivities, ribbon-cutting before span opens to vehicles; pedestrian/bike portion of bridge to open in the spring.
Local, county, and state officials gather for festivities, ribbon-cutting before span opens to vehicles; pedestrian/bike portion of bridge to open in the spring. Overcast skies and drizzly conditions failed to dampen spirits Saturday morning as city, county and state officials — part of a crowd of as many as 170 people — gathered to the opening of a bridge that began as the seeds of an idea first planted 92 years ago. Members of the St. Charles City Council, city staff and other officials braved chilly winds that buffeted the new span about 11 a.m., when St. Charles Mayor Donald DeWitte, wielding an oversized pair of ceremonial scissors, shouted “Merry Christmas St. Charles” as he cut a large ribbon to mark the opening of the Red Gate …

Brief remarks to be made in the Commons Area at St. Charles North High School prior to bridge opening.
Local dignitaries will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony Dec. 15 to mark the opening of the $30 million Red Gate Bridge to vehicle traffic as scheduled. The opening will mark a milestone in15 months of construction and the near completion of an odyssey that began decades ago when a new bridge on the north end of St. Charles first was envisioned. City officials have said the bridge will not officially be completed until next spring, when work is finished on the pedestrian and bicycle pathway that will connect a bike trail near St. Charles North High School with the Fox River Trail near Pinelands Road and existing trails on either side of the Fox River. But the opening of the bridge to vehicle traffic is significant — it is both on schedule an …

Woman taken to Delnor after experiencing dizziness, vision loss prior to accident.
A St. Charles woman was hospitalized after her vehicle crashed and rolled onto its top Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 21, 2012, on Red Gate Road. Samantha M. Plezbert, 19, of the 5N300 block of Fence Rail Court, was driving a 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser when the crash occurred about 1:44 p.m. in the 400 block of Red Gate Road, west of Meadow View Drive. A St. Charles Police Department accident report states that Plezbert was westbound on Red Gate when she experienced dizziness and blurred vision, and then was unable to see anything. The vehicle continued westbound but crossed the eastbound lane and left the roadway, struck a sign post and then made contact with three trees and began to roll over, ending up on its roof. The accident report states …

Traffic lights can be set to run at specific times (before/after school) and then blink the remaining times. The school/city has had a police officer at the intersection, but it still is not a good long-term solution.   more ›
