Brick Work Nears at St. Charles’ Old City Hall

Six-month-long exterior renovation of the St. Charles Municipal Center is starting to take shape.

Scaffolding is going up on the west side of North Riverside Avenue, where preparations are under way for brick and mortar work on the old St. Charles City Hall, circa 1892, which today is an annex to the much larger St. Charles Municipal Center, 2 E. Main St. Last week, the St. Charles Public Works Department started preparations for the project, which is part of a six-month-long exterior renovation of the Municipal Center to make the building weather-tight.   Let Patch save you time. St. Charles Municipal Center Renovation Starts This Week

Southern entrance and parking lot at Main Street and Riverside Avenue will remain closed for duration of six-month project.

Don’t worry — if you blink, you won’t miss it, because it’s going to take awhile: The St. Charles Public Works Department is beginning a six-month-long exterior construction project at the St. Charles Municipal Center, 2 E. Main St., beginning this week. “The project will address deficiencies in the exterior shell of the building caused by natural aging of the facility,” said Assistant Public Works Director Peter Suhr. “The facility will receive a new roof, brick repair, new windows, stone repair and painting. This maintenance project will ensure the building remains weather-tight for years to come.” According to a release from the city, the building will remain open during normal hours, and all city business will continue as usual …

Construction Ahead: St. Charles Municipal Center

The St. Charles City Council is poised to give final approval to a $1.35 million contract for roof, wall and other exterior repairs. Work could start in early May, and is expected to take six months.

The city is poised to begin a six-month exterior overhaul of the St. Charles Municipal Center that will include roof work, the refurbishment of a wall and the replacement of windows and some doors to keep the structure weather-tight. The St. Charles City Council Government Services Committee recommended formal council approval of the $1.35 million contract for the work. City officials told the council the bid came in well under the $1.5 million estimated cost of the project. The work, St. Charles Public Services Manager Peter Suhr told alderman, was recommended after a study last year of the building’s shell. The study, he said, revealed significant problems that need to be addressed to make the building weather-tight. The City Council, in…

Why are government buildings given the prime locations in any city? All government facilities should be located in the most undesireable realestate within the city. The prime locations should go to revenue producing entities.   more ›

Downtown St. Charles Gets Historical Marker

Marker captures more than 100 years of change at the site of the St. Charles Municipal Plaza, including the 1929 St. Charles Fixture Co. fire and the 1913 Main Street train crash.

Those with an eye for community history or who simply wonder what different parts of town looked like 50 or 100 years ago have a new stop to make to learn a thing or two about St. Charles’ past. The new Downtown St. Charles Historical Markers Project recently installed its first of three planned historical markers, according to a release issued Tuesday by the Downtown St. Charles Partnership. The first one has been placed on the St. Charles Municipal Center Plaza, 2 E. Main St., and displays chronological accounts of the center’s history, the release states. Highlighted among those is the story of the 1913 train accident on Main Street. Great Western Engine No. 214 ran off the end of the track on the riverfront spur line, crashing into the…

As Vanessa pointed out, the St. Charles citizens, especially those in the 3rd and 4th Ward who will be most affected by the Lexington Club worked diligently to look at the facts and voice against this to the city council. Our Ward members voted with us, but unfortunatetly the rest of city council did not. It appears that they were more concerned about appeasing the people with the money, …   more ›
