Provisions of an Illinois law expands on parents' responsibilities to prevent underage drinking on their property.
A law taking effect Jan. 1 targeting underage drinking will crack down on parents who allow minors to drink anywhere on their property. The new law expands on one that specifies it is illegal for adults to let minors drink at their home. The expanded law makes it a misdemeanor carrying a $500 fine for any adult to knowingly permit minors under the age of 21 to drink alcohol on their property or in their home. If the violation results in bodily harm or death, the adult will be charged with a felony, according to a press release from the city of Wheaton. A party on Batavia's east side got out of hand over the weekend. Here's what happened.
Update: The teen who held the Saturday party held another party on Sunday, police said. He received multiple charges from the State's Attorney's Office after the second party. For more details, click here. An 19-year-old Batavia man is headed to court after police broke up an underage drinking party on the city's east side on Saturday. Andrew P. Pederson, 19, of the 800 block of Pottawatomie Trail, received a notice to appear in court for a city ordinance violation of an unlawful residential gathering at his address, according to a police report. Robert Caruso claims police violated his rights after responding to loud music complaint.
The Geneva father charged with allowing an October underage drinking party at his home wants the case thrown out because police had no probable cause to enter the residence, according to court records. Robert Caruso, 49, is accused of letting four teens drink at the family's home in the 500 block of South Eight Street during the early morning hours of Oct. 9, 2011. Police were called to the residence on a loud music complaint around 12:55 a.m. Three of the four teens, described in court records as "invitees" of a member of Caruso's family, played for the Geneva High School football team.
