Volunteers Sought to Help Restore Fabyan East Forest Preserve Saturday

Fabyan East woods covers more than 100 acres and is one of the largest solid blocks of oak-hickory woods owned by the district.

Fabyan East Forest Preserve will look decidedly different, come Saturday afternoon. That’s because Saturday, Nov. 17, from 9 a.m. to noon, the Forest Preserve District of Kane County will host the first of three restoration workdays planned for this year, at the preserve. Staff and volunteers are going to begin the first phase of removing non-native, invasive brush such as buckthorn and honeysuckle, as well as remove any litter throughout the old woodland. The brush cutting will eventually open up the view into the preserve from Route 25. “Acorns annually drop from the canopies of the giant oaks here, but the nuts don’t grow into trees due to the intensive shade. Oaks need full sun to survive,” said Drew Ullberg, director of natural …

St. Charles Residents Help Feed Starving Kids Overseas

Hundreds turn out at Christ Community Church to help pack meal bags for Feed My Starving Children; the church's goal is to pack 1 million meals over several weekends.

Willing hands and joyful heart were the order of the day, and hairnets were the head gear du jour Saturday at Christ Community Church, 37W100 Bolcum Road, where volunteers gathered in shifts to put together meal packages to feed starving children around the world. They came in family groups, neighborhoods groups, clubs and even school groups — a contingent from St. Charles East was there for part of the day — working in two-hour shifts to pack as many meals as possible to feed starving children around the world. Feed My Starving Children, the agency that runs the program and distributes the food, says there is more than enough food being produced into the world today to ensure that no on goes hungry, yet 1 billion do. When they arrived, …

Genevans Randy and Sue Sycks Hold Memorial Golf Classic Sept. 10 at Eagle Brook

Won't you help by playing? Funds fight heroin abuse and other substance abuse.

On Sept. 10, for the final time, the Josh Sycks Memorial Golf Classic will tee off to benefit the Behavioral Health Services Center in Elgin, a substance abuse treatment program of Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI). The finale will take place at the Eagle Brook Country Club in Geneva. The event is named for Josh Sycks who became addicted to heroin in his late teens. Frantic, his parents—Randy and Sue Sycks of Geneva—tried to get him into treatment at LSSI’s Elgin Center, but tragically, no bed was available. Josh died of an overdose in 2002 at the age of 20. “We had to do something so that the same thing didn’t happen to someone else’s son,” says Randy. So, the couple began a golf fundraiser on behalf of LSSI treatment services …

Visit a Swedish Days Food Booth for a Good Cause

Swedish Days are coming June 19 through June 24, and that's a good thing, for food, folks, fun ... and nonprofit organizations.

The food booths that are found around downtown Geneva during Swedish Days are run by non-profit organizations. For many, the monies raised from the patronage of these booths, during the week, is the largest and perhaps only fundraiser these groups do.  This year, 14 nonprofits are raising funds for more than 38 charities, both local and national. They include Lazarus House, Hesed House, Northern Illinois Food Bank, Living Well Cancer Research, Feed My Starving Children, Mutual Ground, Salvation Army, Drug Prevention, NE Illinois Special Olympics, scholarships, mission trips and more than 20 others. The nonprofits participating are Fox Valley Jewish Neighbors, Geneva American Legion Post 75, Geneva Lions Club, Geneva Lutheran Church, Geneva…

Mia's 15th Birthday Brings a Special Present to Marklund

Mia Garbaccio wanted no gifts for her birthday; instead she gave a $100 donation to Marklund

A unique surprise 15th birthday party was held Friday, April 15, at Marklund Hyde Center, 1S450 Wyatt Dr., Geneva. Mia Garbaccio of Batavia, Mia’s sister Gabby, and Amy Cole of Geneva chose to celebrate Mia’s 15th birthday with Marklund residents. In honor of the milestone, Mia wanted no gifts; instead she gave a $100 donation to Marklund. The girls have been volunteering at Marklund since July 2010. Together they have logged 191 hours. To say they are devoted is an understatement. “At a time of life when a lot of teens might choose to focus on themselves, Mia, Gabby and Amy gave to others,” said Cathy Nikrandt, volunteer manager at Marklund. “We are so lucky to have them share their time and energy with us. They are very special girls.” “…
