This is the highest number of cases since 2007. Here's the latest update from the County Health Department.
The Kane County Health Department on Wednesday reported another human case of West Nile Virus, bringing the total so far this season to 11. A 50-year-old man from South Elgin who contracted the virus was hospitalized and has since been discharged. This is the most West Nile cases Kane County has had since 2007. The State Health Department has recorded 211 cases statewide this year, including nine deaths. Last year there were 34 cases and three deaths. The case being reported today (Oct. 10, 2012) is an 85-year-old Elgin man, who was hospitalized and has since been discharged. The Health Department will be reporting new cases once a week on Wednesdays until the end of the West Nile season, which ends with the first hard frost. An Aurora man is the latest victim and survived, as did the second victim, a Batavia teenager. The county’s first victim, an Elgin man, died last month.
A 70-year-old Aurora man has been confirmed as the third human to be infected with West Nile virus in Kane County this season, Kane County Health Department announced Wednesday. The man was hospitalized, was discharged and is recovering. In a release, the Kane County Health Department said the county’s first two West Nill virus cases involved a 16-year-old Batavia girl, and a 64-year-old Elgin man who died last month. Kane County’s second human case of mosquito-borne illness this year was in Batavia, and prompts renewed warnings about taking precautions against mosquitoes.
The Kane County Health Department has recorded its second case of West Nile virus this season after a 16-year-old Batavia girl reported feeling ill last month but was not hospitalized. She since has recovered. This is the second case reported in Kane County. The first case was a 64-year-old Elgin man who died last month, the department states in a release. The hot and dry summer this year has produced the perfect combination of conditions for the Culex mosquito, the species that is known to carry the virus, and the department said in its release that it is likely there will be more activity before the season is over. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced this week that reported cases of West Nile Virus are at an all time high. “The 1,118 cases reported thus far in 2012 is the highest number of West Nile virus disease cases reported to CDC through the third week in August since West Nile virus was first detected in the United States in 1999,” the CDC reported. While Illinois does not rank among the top five states in terms of cases, there have been 21 reported human cases of West Nile Virus in Illinois as of Aug. 21. Those cases have been clustered in the Chicago area, with 13 human cases in Cook County and one in Lake County. Three more batches (or pools) of mosquitoes collected this week have tested positive for West Nile Virus, the Kane County Health Department reported Friday, July 13. The mosquito batches were collected in Kane County Health Department traps in Aurora, Montgomery and Carpentersville. This brings the total to five positive batches this year, the second in from Carpentersville. These positive mosquito batches usually are the first indicators of West Nile activity. The mosquitoes in Kane County are carrying a nasty surprise again this year. The first mosquitoes collected in Kane County this summer have tested positive for West Nile Virus, the Kane County Health Department announced Thursday. Two mosquito batches collected in Health Department traps in Elgin and Carpentersville this week have been confirmed positive for the disease. It’s official: Mosquitoes that test positive for the West Nile virus have been discovered in northern Illinois, according to information released by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). “We are starting to see West Nile virus in mosquitoes and birds, and when temperatures rise and conditions dry up, we typically see increased reports of West Nile virus,” Dr. Damon T. Arnold, IDPH director, said June 30. Testing began May 1.
