Batavia Grapplers Can't Match St. Charles East

Bulldogs drop first conference meet, 43-25.

St. Charles East's Peter Bellino hadn't gone to overtime in any of his bouts this winter before Friday night's Upstate Eight Conference meet at Batavia. The junior went and back and forth against Laren Eustace at 140 pounds, before escaping with a victory in overtime. Bellino's victory was one of many impressive ones for the Saints as they manhandled the Bulldogs most of the night, winning 43-25. "Match after match we were getting outwrestled," Batavia coach Ben Morris said. "I think we're doing a lot of the right things, but we're just getting outwrestled." Crosstown Rivals in St. Charles Open Conference Wrestling Season

East and North high schools face off in the pre-Thanksgiving Upstate 8 River meet.

The St. Charles East wrestling team beat St. Charles North 59-21 on Wednesday night to open the Upstate 8 River Conference season for both teams. The eve of Thanksgiving match, now a St. Charles tradition, featured two teams with differing expectations.   After finishing second in its Regional last season, East graduated state champion Brandon Rubino (112 pounds) and state qualifier Alex Maynard (135 pounds). They return with another state qualifier, senior Joe Dede (119 pounds) and a Regional second-place finisher, senior Mike Caddy (160 pounds). Caddy finished with a 24-13 regular season record.
