By the way -- Vertical Drop in St. Charles, which has been in business for over 30 years (As opposed to Wild Monk for a year) is also closing its doors. I believe one of your readers inquired as to what was going on with Vertical Drop many months ago when they noticed their window displays were different from past years. The Patch deemed that a "non-story" and told the reader to call themselves and ask. Hmmmm -- The Patch could perhaps have had a scoop but wasn't interested in making a phone call. Of course, the story didn't involve a place that served alcohol so why would they be interested. Very sad to see the Vertical Drop go. I bought my first pair of skis there as a teenager.

It's a shame. I had tried to go there a couple of times in the past two weeks and figured it must have closed. I liked the place.

Really? Never heard of that -- guess the Patch is a different kind of animal. I thought you were a reporter who reported the facts of a story. I thought if you, as an editor and reporter, wanted to express opinions you would do that in an Editorial -- or perhaps a blog. Guess that's my bad for not understanding your, or the Patch's, purpose.

Ted, no offense but, could you please butt out of the comments section? Unless somebody asks you a direct question can't you just let the readers make the comments and you stick to the reporting? Thanks.

I agree, Ted -- it is not always easy to tell if someone has had too much to drink (even for someone who is trained to see the signs) as some people do hold it very well. Some people can also seem fine and then have one more drink and they are out of it. It can be a fine line for any establishment.

Princess? Lazy Lois? Wow, what's with that? How silly. I don't hear anyone in any of the comments I've read moaning about the drunk lady. My comment (and many others that I have read here) relate to the fact that the Beehive was cited and "being held accountable". And, perhaps they should be -- I don't know if she drank in their bar (or was just in their bar after being somewhere else) or if they purposely over served her to make a buck or not. All I know from what I've read is that she left the bar and was observed by an officer from the time she left, fell down, got up, then walked to her car, then drove somewhat erratically, and then hit a parked car. At that time, the officer approached her. If the officer did not see reasonable cause or evidence that she was drunk until she hit the car and approached her, why is a bar supposed to know so much more about her state? Apparently, she didn't seem that bad off. I am all for personable responsibility -- hold this woman accountable. "She was drunk by her own accord" -- Agreed!, "this girl drank too much and made a personal decision to drive". Agreed! (If Lois were to simply use the name Lois or Lois5 would you feel better?)

I understand probable cause. However, they have cited the Beehive for overserving OR allowing an intoxicated person to remain in their bar. So a busy bar with a lot of patrons was supposed to realise that some person (whom they may or may not have served) was intoxicated, but a police officer who watched her walk, fall down, walk again, get in a car and drive, was unable to determine that she was intoxicated until she hit a parked car. I'm not saying that the police should have pulled her over because they saw her leave a bar, I'm just questioning the fact that they are citing the bar. And, no, I am not a Beehive employee. In fact, I have only been in the Beehive once a long time ago. I'm just tired of hearing everything being blamed on small business owners with no blame being given to individuals.

And will the STC police also be cited? Apparently, she was so drunk that the Beehive should have known, yet the officer saw her fall down and then get into her car, saw her drifting to the center line and then waited until she struck a car. Sounds like he wasn't sure about her state until he went up to her after the crash. From the earlier story:

"According to the report, police actually saw Kathryn Dale Doepke, 22, of the 100 block of South 3rd Street, after she left The Beehive Tavern, 204 W. Main St. According to reports, an officer saw her slip and fall down in the snow as she headed toward her vehicle, but she got right up, apparently unhurt. She then headed into a parking lot, got into her vehicle and drove south on 3rd Street. An officer decided to follow Doepke after observing she was driving down the center lane.

Police said Doepke stopped for a stop sign and again for a red light at Main and 3rd, but when the light turned green and she continued south, she veered into a parked car in the 100 block of South 3rd Street."

Maybe if they could add some nice looking signs to the outside building to let you know what's inside -- or perhaps it's possible to add more outdoor entrances into individual stores? Anything to make it look more appealing and give you an idea of what's going on inside.
