Crime & Safety

Emergency Repairs Will Close Part of I-294 Saturday Night

Bridge repairs mean I-294 will be closed right up to I-88 between midnight Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday, June 9, 2013. That one of many project to watch out for this weekend.

Bridge repairs will close the northbound Tri-State Tollway (I-294) from I-88 to I-90 for about eight hours this weekend, the Daily Herald reports.

According to an article my transportation writer Marni Pyke, the northbound Tri-State will close from midnight Saturday to 80 a.m. Sunday, June 9, 2013, between the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) and Jane Addams Tollway (I-90).

Again, that's all lanes of northbound traffic on I-294.

The work is necessary because a dump truck hit the Balmoral Avenue bridge Monday, causing structural damage.

But that's not all the work going on this weekend, according to a press release from the Illinois Tollway.

Overnight and daytime lane closures are scheduled for sign installation, pavement repairs and ramp replacement work.

Work Zone Safety

A 45 mph speed limit is in effect 24/7 in all construction zones, whether or not workers are present. Drivers should continue to watch for changing traffic patterns, milled surfaces, uneven pavement levels and traffic shifts at bridges and use caution at all times. Illinois State Police have zero tolerance for drivers speeding in work zones. The minimum penalty for speeding in a work zone is $375. Posted signs advise drivers of a $10,000 fine and 14-year jail sentence for hitting a roadway worker.
