Man Wearing 3 Pairs of Jeans Faces Theft, Other Charges

St. Charles police said the Schaumburg man man fled when confronted and hid in a wooded area near Charlestowne Mall.

A man who police caught wearing three pairs of jeans and a hammer tucked in his waistband faces retail theft and other charges after he fled loss-prevention personnel at a local department store during an attempt to detain him until police arrived.

Adnan Trey Shariff, 36, of the 1000 block of Plum Grove Road, Schaumburg, was charged at 5:58 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at Kohl’s, 3840 E. Main St., with retail theft, criminal trespass, and possession of a key from a coin-operated machine.

Police were called to the store on a report of a retail theft, and that the suspect was was running through the parking lot toward a retention pond. Police were advised he had a hammer in his possession and was wearing three pair of jeans.

When police arrived, they could not find the suspect, later identified as Shariff, who was believed to be hiding in a cornfield or wooded area north of the Charlestowne Mall. Officers even went to the roof of the mall with security personnel in hopes of gaining a clearer view of where Shariff might be hiding, but to no avail.

As police continued to search the area, one officer talked with Kohl’s personnel and learned that Shariff had entered the store, picked up a tote and then collected three pairs of jeans, the report states. Shariff then entered a fitting room, where store personnel waited near the entrance and heard some banging sounds. When Shariff left, they entered and found a security device and sales tags on the fitting room floor.

Security personnel told police they had surveillance photos of Shariff as he exited the fitting room.

Store personnel told police they then watched as Shariff put the tote, which now held the jeans he had been wearing when he entered the store, on one of the displays, according to the report. A Kohl’s security woman attempted to confront Shariff after he left the store, but he turned and glared at her. That’s when she noticed the handle of a hammer sticking out of his waistband. Then Shariff began running, the report states.

Meantime, police called in additional officers and a K-9 unit to search the wooded area. Shariff was in custody within 15 minutes of the K-9 unit’s arrival, the report states.

According to the report, Shariff had a hammer, four screwdrivers and a metal scraper in his possession when they caught up with him. Police said he also had a vending machine key, a pair of gloves, a marble, a nylon drawstring tote, a wallet, a multi-tool/knife, a plastic bag containing loose change, a cellphone, a container of vitamins and a mesh pouch containing several computer thumb drives.

According to police, mall security had banned Shariff from the mall on June 27, 2013, after he was seen on surveillance video wandering in a restricted area, which is why he was charged with trespassing.

Prosecutors declined to authorize a charge of possession of burglary tools, the report states.

He posted $150 cash bond and was released pending an Aug. 8, 2013 court appearance.
