Motorcyclist Tops 150+ mph Fleeing St. Charles Police

A motorcyclist who St. Charles police saw speeding at more than 75 mph in a 45 mph zone faces a felony and multiple other charges after a chase that saw the motorcyclist top speeds of more than 150 mph.

Zachary John Robinson, 26, of the 700 block of Wild Ginger Road, Sugar Grove, was charged at 12:04 a.m. Sunday, June 30, 2013, with aggravated fleeing and eluding, a felony; speeding in excess of 40 mph over the limit; speeding in excess of 30 mph over the limit; passing in a no-passing zone; improper passing on the left; no insurance; and no registration.

Robinson was transported to the Kane County Jail to await a court appearance.

The incident unfolded about 9:05 p.m. June 29 as police, who had conducted a well-being check along the 300 block of South Randall Road, saw a black “crotch rocket” motorcycle speeding southbound on Randall. Police nearly caught up with the motorcycle at a stoplight at Bricher Road. But when the light changed, police said the motorcycle took off at a high rate of speed in excess of 75 mph. The chase turned westbound onto Keslinger Road, and police said they could see the motorcyclist keep looking back over his shoulder but not stopping.

At one point, while looking back over his shoulder, police said the cyclist nearly rear-ended a van, then passed it, accelerating to well beyond the posted speed limit. The motorcyclist crossed the double-yellow lines indicating a “no passing zone” to pass other westbound vehicles and drove onto the painted yellow median.

Police said as they passed Peck Road, the motorcyclist began driving in the opposite lane to pass other vehicles, causing oncoming traffic to exit the roadway onto its south shoulder. At that point, the report states, the lead officer in the chase realized he was going 130 mph trying to keep up with the motorcycle and terminated the chase. Police said the motorcycle continued to accelerate as it fled at speeds in excess of 150 mph. The speed limit there is 50 mph, police said.

While St. Charles police terminated the chase, they learned that Elburn officers were waiting for the  motorcyclist at Keslinger Road and Route 47. Minutes later, Elburn police reported they had found the motorcycle abandoned behind some trees near Patriot Drive and Liberty Parkway in a subdivision just south of Keslinger and east of Route 47. Shortly after that, Elburn police had the driver in custody, the report states.

Police said the motorcycle, a 2006 Yamaha, was lacking a speedometer and a rearview mirror, and its license plate was expired. Found nearby were a backpack and a helmet police had seen the driver wearing, and the backpack contained 12 cans of beer, a large bottle of whisky that was about half full. Police said they could smell alcohol on Robinson’s breath, but he refused to take a breath or other tests and he was arrested.

St. Charles police then took Robinson to the St. Charles Police Department, 211 N. Riverside Drive, where he was charged.
