River Scare: Boat’s Engine Quits Above St. Charles Dam

Boat's motor quits upstream from dam, bringing police and firefighters to the scene.

Imagine finding yourself adrift in a boat a scant 60 yards or so from a dam.


That’s what happened to about noon Friday, June 21, 2013, when a boater’s motor quit about 200 feet north of the dam as his boat continued to drift downstream with the current. The incident sparked a response from St. Charles police and firefighters.


Police were dispatched to assisted firefighters at the Hotel Baker, which sites on the west bank of the river between the dam and Main Street.

But within minutes, firefighters and police were clearing the scene. Authorities said the boat made it safely to the shore without further issue.
