City Poised to Post ‘No Gun’ Signs on Its Buildings

Move will put the city of St. Charles in compliance with the state's "concealed-carry" gun law.

Visitors to City Hall will notice some new signs come Jan. 1. The new signs notify the public that firearms, concealed or otherwise, are prohibited on City property.

Public Act 98-63, the Firearm Concealed Carry Act, became state law effective July 9. Among other provisions, guns are specifically prohibited in local government buildings. The new law also requires the city to post signs, which have been standardized and approved by the Illinois State Police.

“Beginning Jan. 1, the city will be in compliance with the Firearm Concealed Carry Act. The signs fulfill one requirement; however, the city will amend our policies to ensure compliance,” says Human Resources Director Kathy Livernois.

Additional information about the concealed-carry law can be found on the Illinois State Police website, where there also is a page with the text of the law.
